China launches first module for a new space station

China has recently launched “Tianhe,” the new essential core module for the new Chinese Large Modular Space Station, to be connected to 2 smaller lab capsules, forming the T-shaped space station. The Chinese Large Modular Space Station is a third generation modular space station, where pieces of the space station have been launched and assembled separately.

Unlike the International Space Station (ISS), this station is significantly smaller, only around 20% of the size of the ISS. It also has a lower mass and accommodates less crew members (Space.com, n.d.). However, while incomparable, it was designed to be more efficient for conducting scientific research and experiments (CBS, n.d).

After being banned from participating in the ISS, China has since strived to become an independent “space superpower.” Currently, China has sent 2 rovers to Mars and a lunar rover for planetary exploration programs (CBS, n.d).
