With the closing ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games on February 20th, the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games has now started 5 days ago. Approximately 600 Paralympic athletes will be competing, and Beijing has now become the first city to have hosted both the summer and winter editions of the Paralympic Games (having previously hosted the Summer Paralympic Games in 2008).

The 2022 Paralympic Games will be running for 10 days, from March 4th to 13th, with 78 events across 6 different sports; alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, snowboarding, para ice hockey and wheelchair curling.

Just like the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games also have their own mascot. Shuey Rhon Rhon (雪容融) is the Paralympic Games counterpart to Bing Dwen Dwen (冰墩墩), being an anthropomorphic Chinese red lantern. Aside from Shuey Rhon Rhon representing China’s culture and symbolising prosperity, “the glow emanating from Shuey Rhon Rhon's heart (surrounding the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics logo) symbolises the friendship, warmth, courage and perseverance of Para athletes - traits that inspire millions of people around the world every day” (International Olympic Committee, 2022).

Just as the 2022 Olympic Games were thrilling to watch, the 2022 Paralympic Games is equally as exciting. Be Shuey to give it a watch if you haven’t yet!
