“C is for cookie, that's good enough for me” - Cookie Monster.
52 years ago, Sesame Street made its first premiere on PBS. Having won 189 Emmy Awards and 11 Grammy Awards as of 2018, it is undoubtedly the most recognised children’s show. Its success has even led to it being able to self support itself from revenue and as of 2006, being independently produced in 20 countries (Wikipedia, n.d.).
The educational television series is well known for its muppets cast; from the lovable Elmo to the curious Big Bird, to the relatable grouch Oscar. Through these puppets, children learn various life lessons, which the show has been formally studied for its educational effects (Wikipedia, n.d.). New muppets have been introduced to help kids learn, such as Julia, a muppet with autism and Kami, an HIV positive muppet.
Sesame Street’s influence exceeds simply being a television show. It’s been referenced in Big Hero 6, Adventure Time, Pokémon and many more. The cast also gets invited to collaborate with various media creators, with Cookie Monster appearing on The Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert and Elmo being sassy on Rove (“Elmo came this far, and he gets two minutes!?” - Elmo, 2008). With such popularity, Sesame Street will continue to be on its one-way street to more success.
