Today in History: SpaceX Dragon capsule soars high

Edited by Lianne Lee

On December 8th, 2010, SpaceX’s Dragon capsule was successfully launched.

Dragon is the first commercial spacecraft to be successfully recovered from orbit. Before SpaceX, rockets were considered one-time use, with most of the parts not being able to be reused for future missions. SpaceX’s reusable approach revolutionized the spacecraft industry by lowering launch costs, and to date, they have successfully transported astronauts delivered payloads to the International Space Station with their reusable rockets in 2020.

The vision and success of SpaceX have led to rival companies like Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic, which also use reusable rockets but are more focused on space travel. As the first private company to launch, orbit, and recover a spacecraft, SpaceX is looking to expand into interplanetary travel and internet service with satellites. Perhaps SpaceX can rocket themselves into being one of the first humans on Mars.
