M+ Museum is one of the largest art projects to take place in Hong Kong, a financial district and bustling city. As a part of the Western Kowloon Cultural District, M+ Museum strives to make visual experiences accessible and memorable to the general public. The West Kowloon Cultural District is a large-scale arts development project, and it will eventually include 17 venues for arts exploration (Our Story, n.d.). The M+ Museum is part of the project and is scheduled to open on 12 November, 2021 (M+ Museum, 2021).
M+ Museum will contain various art exhibitions and cinema screenings in a building designed by Herzog & de Meuron, with Arup and TFP Farrells overlooking Hong Kong’s famous Victoria Harbour (Hong Kong's, n.d.). Exhibitions range from aesthetically pleasing artworks to fascinating photographs, all of which would leave a lasting impression in the audience's minds.
Individuals, Networks, Expressions is one of the many art exhibitions that will be on display in the M+ Museum. This exhibition features a variety of artists whose artworks were put together to create a story of the arts which explores experiences and the identity of each individual (Hong Kong's, n.d.). Highlighted artworks on display include Irene Chou’s Impact II, which is an ink and colour painting on paper, as well as Michael Lin’s Untitled (Cigarette Break), which features two sofas with a metal ashtray (Hong Kong's, n.d.).
With so many choices of exploration in terms of visual cultures, M+ Museum is an experience that nobody should miss. Students who have an interest in visual arts can have a quieter space to reflect and take inspiration from artists and styles of artworks provided. Nonetheless, artworks in the museum are pleasing to the eyes, and one can safely say that these artworks can be a form of eye bleach provided freely and to anyone. A splash of vibrant colour (or an artistic lack thereof) gives everyone an opportunity to sit back and relax from the stresses of schoolwork.
