A Celebration of Reading and Writing

Edited by Rachel Heung

(Hong Kong International Literary Festival, 2021)

From 5th to 15th of November all book lovers will have a chance to participate in the many events organized within the frames of the 21st Hong Kong International Literary Festival. Titled The Rebound Edition, this year’s Festival will focus on “Resilience, Recovery and Mental Health, with an emphasis on new fiction and the joy of reading” (Festival, 2021). Among the many events, there are a few that caught my attention and that may be of interest to other high school students.

Firstly, anyone who is interested in learning how to write young adult (YA) fantasy and dystopian fiction should attend the writing workshop with Jordan Rivet at the Fringe Underground Theatre on 14 November. Jordan Rivet is an American author of swashbuckling YA fantasy and post-apocalyptic science fiction. Originally from Arizona, she has lived in Hong Kong with her husband since 2010 (Goodreads 2014). She has written more than two dozen novels included in six series of YA fantasy adventures and science fiction.

Another event that should not be missed is the virtual talk by bestselling YA author, Kiran Millwood Hargrave and award-winning artist Tom de Freston happening at JC Studio Theatre, Fringe on 14 November. The pair will talk about their collaborative work on the book Julia and the Shark (2021). It is a book about a girl named Julia who moves with her family to live in a lighthouse in Unst, Shetland. Julia’s mum is a marine biologist with an interest in Greenland sharks. It becomes clear that she is also experiencing mental health issues. Kiran and Tom are not only collaborators in their work they are partners in life as well (Scottishbooktrust 2021). Some of you might remember Kiran by her book The Island at the End of Everything (2017) that was listed for the Hong Kong Battle of the Books.
