Chances are, if you’re reading this, you probably like reading. Who else would read the “Literature” section of this article? Are you looking for a new book to devour? Looking to pick up reading as a new hobby? This is the list for you! Here are a few reading recommendations sorted out into genre categories.

Looking for a book to get your heart racing? Here’s a mystery/thriller read you might not have heard of…

An adult thriller heist novel described as an exploration of the Chinese American identity, Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li is about a Harvard art history student who signs themselves on to steal back artefacts looted from Ancient China. It appeared on a Goodreads List of “Readers’ Most Anticipated New Spring Books” (Cybil, 2022). Netflix has already snatched the book up for an on-screen TV adaptation before its release (Goldberg, 2021).

Do you want to be sucked into another world? Look no further. Here is a fantasy read…

The Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett is easily the most well known absurdist fantasy of all time. Taking place on a flat world (the Disc) sitting on top of a herd of elephants who are standing on a giant turtle swimming through space, the Discworld series explores the lives of different people in the world. The 41 book series can be broken down into its own mini “series” with independent story arcs, along with a few standalone books. There are different starting points for the series, the most popular being Mort, following Death’s apprentice navigating his job. The personification of Death is a fan favourite character who makes frequent appearances throughout the series (Harrison, 2017).

Finally, a comforting book :)

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman follows Frances Janvier, a 17-year-old girl who is determined to get into Cambridge University. In her limited free time, she listens to and creates fan art for the podcast Universe City. The novel documents the process of Frances meeting the creator of Universe City, and the strong bonds that characters have with each other (Radio Silence, 2017). Oseman is also the author of a couple of other popular books, such as Solitaire and Loveless, as well as writing and illustrating the graphic novel series Heartstopper (YA Fiction, n.d).
