Ever since the discovery of space, humans have been endlessly exploring and wandering every planet we discover. May 5th, 1961, marks an important date where navy commander Alan Bartllet Shepare Jr. was sent into space aboard the Freedom 7 capsule (History.com Editors, 2018).
This suborbital flight lasted a total of fifteen minutes, but despite the seemingly short amount of time it spent in space, it was described as a “major triumph” and achievement as he was the first American that had travelled to space. The suborbital flight reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, and allowed scientists at NASA to gain a deeper understanding of our atmosphere.
