Overwatch is a well-known game for its terrible role system and for its popularity. The game was first unveiled in 2014 at Blizzcon, and was finally released in 2016. Overwatch is a multiplayer first-person 6v6 team-based combat action game (Wikipedia, n.d.) (Overwatch, n.d). The game has a roster 32 of heroes to play all with unique abilities, and the teams compete to achieve map-specific objectives in a period of time (Wikipedia, n.d.). Each hero fits into a role which is either tank, support, or damage -- every hero has their own set of abilities consisting of 3 abilities, 2 of which will be set on a cooldown after use, but the third ability requires the player to earn point throughout the game to launch an ultimate attack which could impact the game heavily (Galloway, 2020).
In recent years the player base has been on the decline with 40 million active players in May of 2018, and in 2021, this number had dropped all the way to 800,000 and possibly as little as 620,000. As the player base drops, many await the release of the sequel game, ‘Overwatch 2’ (Techcake, 2021).
‘Overwatch 2’ was first announced in 2019 and since has had built up its suspense for the three years. Due to the lack of updated news in the last few months and the absence of the beta release of the game, it left many for a while to believe that Overwatch 2 would never be released (Deschamps, 2022). Like another game… COUGH COUGH SILKSONG WHEN ARE YOU COMING OUT? COUGH. However, recently it has been leaked that Overwatch 2 beta is releasing in late February (Gwilliam, 2022) (Galekovic, 2022). Overwatch 2 will also come with new and exclusive content such as new heroes, maps, and stories. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
