Predictions for 2022 music

Edited by Lianne Lee

(John, 2022)

Happy 2022! Music is a huge part of our daily lives, we listen to it all the time, from the radio to apps. Hence here are a few predictions for music in the new year. First of all, TikTok will continue blowing up, if that’s even possible. The now third-largest social media platform has become a huge source of revenue for labels and artists. In the past years, we’ve seen artists such as Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion and Olivia Rodrigo gain popularity due to TikTok. This platform is also a place for older songs to become popular again.

Secondly, CDs may revive again because of the vinyl shortage. 2020 was the first year in generations since physical vinyl records have topped CD sales. Orders for new vinyl have been hard to fulfil so prices have increased. Even though it’s uncertain if CDs will be the next physical alternative to vinyl, there still is a chance.

Thirdly, everyone is so tired of the pandemic that once booster shots have been administered and new treatments appear, which then hopefully the world will be somewhat normal again, concert attendance will skyrocket this year. Honestly, who hasn’t felt the urge to go to a concert since the world went into lockdown?

Lastly, Spotify will most likely become the worldwide leader for podcast distribution. The already extremely popular app is used for listening to all kinds of music and audio. They have 172 million premium subscribers worldwide! Apple was the one that basically invented the podcast game more than a decade ago but Spotify is taking over in some areas. The company is taking podcasts really seriously that they even have a new campus in downtown Los Angeles internally called “Pod City”. It has 18 podcast studios and a performance stage. Let’s see if Apple can beat that. What else do you think will take over the music industry in 2022?
